An Australian young sportsman has lost his life after being struck by a cricket ball during a practice session in Melbourne.

The 17-year-old player was training in cricket cages in Ferntree Gully on Tuesday when he was hit in the head or neck by a delivery from an mechanical bowler. It's believed he was using a helmet at the time of the incident.

Emergency services were called to the location shortly before 17:00 local time and the young man was rushed to the children's medical facility in critical condition. He was placed on medical support systems but succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.

Local Reaction and Condolences

The teenager's local cricket club expressed they were "absolutely devastated" by the "untimely death" of one of their players and that the adolescent's death "will impact by everyone in our cricket community".

"I understand how strongly this information will impact across our local area and we will provide any and all support we can to our clubs and sports community," stated the community sports leader.

In a social media post, the teenager's cricket club extended their sympathies to his loved ones and close companions and "to all of those who were acquainted with him and the happiness that he provided".

"We ask you to please respect the privacy of the family during this challenging period," the message added.

Protective Considerations in The Sport

This incident happens just over a decade after another Australian cricketer passed away after being struck on the neck by a ball while playing in a domestic competition.

That earlier death, for which authorities ultimately found no-one was to blame, catalyzed improvements to safety equipment for those playing the sport.
