France will start stopping small boats in Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, after months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the British leader wrote to the French leader urging him to support the initiative and stating there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.
French police have rarely acted to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson says personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible method to snarl the engines of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a short-lived shift towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the previous government official left government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.
Currently French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats before they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of northern France, however it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.
Strong winds are currently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the human trafficking networks will be seeking ways to adapt to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
